چکیده
THE two previous papers in this series have dealt almost exclusively with the movements of fish, such as the eel or the butterfish {Centronotus gunnellus) whose bodies are long and flexible and which exhibit very well-defined waves of muscular contraction when the fish are travelling through the water. The present paper deals primarily with pelagic fish which differ from the eel in two important respects;

The complete mitochondrial genome of the whiting, Merlangius merlangus and the haddock, Melanogrammus aeglefinus: a detailed genomic comparison among closely related species of the Gadidae family.
We determined the first complete mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) sequences for the whiting (Merlangius merlangus, family Gadidae, order Gadiformes) and the haddock (Melanogrammus aeglefinus, family Gadidae, order Gadiformes). The entire mitogenomes were amplified and sequenced by primer walking using newly designed specific internal primers. Lengths were 16,569 and 16,585 bases for whiting and haddoc...
متن کاملRole of kairomones in host location of the pennellid copepod parasite, Lernaeocera branchialis (L. 1767).
The life cycle of the parasitic copepod Lernaeocera branchialis involves 2 hosts, typically a pleuronectiform host upon which development of larvae and mating of adults occurs and a subsequent gadoid host, upon which the adult female feeds and reproduces. Both the copepodid and adult female stages must therefore locate and identify a suitable host to continue the life cycle. Several mechanisms ...

Complex Modal Analysis of the Swimming Motion of a Whiting
The kinematics of the transverse motion of a swimming fish are analyzed using a complex modal decomposition. Cinematographic images of a swimming whiting (Gadus merlangus) were obtained from the work of Sir James Gray (Journal of Experimental Biology, 1933). The position of the midline for each image was determined, and used to produce planar positions of virtual markers distributed along the m...
متن کاملLandscape effects on demersal fish revealed by field observations and predictive seabed modelling
Nature conservation and fisheries management often focus on particular seabed features that are considered vulnerable or important to commercial species. As a result, individual seabed types are protected in isolation, without any understanding of what effect the mixture of seabed types within the landscape has on ecosystem functions. Here we undertook predictive seabed modelling within a coast...
